Malden’s Flag Football League: Preparing for the Red Storm

Kristy Yang December 10, 2015 2 minutes read

Flag football is a sport where ball carriers are downed by the other team pulling a maker, a tag, or something that’s attached to the belt, rather than people tackling each other.

Malden Cheverus student, Mackenzie Curtis, is in eighth grade and won the New England Patriots National Football League (NFL) Flag tournament. The Cheverus flag football team has qualified to go on to the national tournament in San Francisco, California.

Curtis was exposed to flag football through her brothers who played for the Malden Cheverus Twisters Flag Football, which began three years ago. She often played against the boys at Macdonald Stadium, which had helped her to gain a position on the all-girls all-star team. She has played both defensive back and running back for the team.

Mayor Gary Christenson has recently congratulated Curtis and the team for their great achievement. Curtis and her team also received a championship award. The North Shore Flag Football League is currently raising money to fund the team’s trip to San Francisco for the NFL Flag nationals.

The coach of the team is Austin Bradshaw. Other members of the team include Ciara Collins, Daniela Dalleva, Jada Flores, Tori Limone, Courtney Luker, Mackenzie Marmion, Alyssa Moreland, and Logan Plosker.

They are going against NHFFL Red Storm and Red Zone All Stars. Malden wishes the team the best of luck in the tournament.

For more information on Mackenzie Curtis & the league, here is an article from the City of Malden website, and here is an article from the NFL FLAG website.
