Malden High School collaboratively works with Bunker Hill Community College to provide students at Malden High School with the opportunity to enroll in dual enrollment that allows high school students to take college courses while also taking their regular classes.

Numerous numbers of courses whether they be online or in-person, are offered to students depending on their grade level. Freshman students are offered the least amount of courses, the options that are offered are, English, Mathematics, Biology, Psychology, etc.

One may ask how students make it possible to juggle their college courses, their required regular classes, and possibly any extracurricular activities that they may participate in. Freshman Eldana Abhrame currently is enrolled in an online English course at Bunker Hill which takes place weekly. Abhrame describes the program as, “nicely-paced and a great, supportive environment with very supportive and understanding professors who help ease the stress that we may already of.”

Time management is a skill that is critical to possess for success in this program. Although Abrhame recommends that other students participate in the program, she describes it as, “definitely a more personal experience so I can’t speak for everyone because everyone has their own stress management levels… it definitely get stressful when you have over eight classes to juggle, but at the end of the day it definitely think it’s worth it because you get credits for the course at Malden High too.”

Due to the collaboration between the two campuses, many staff members from Malden High School work with Bunker Hill to provide a safe and comfortable environment for students.

Pasquale DiBenedetto, an English professor at both MHS and BHCC describes this program as, “a great opportunity for students to continue to enhance their education, I’m a firm believer in it… it’s also something that I’ve seen my former students get a lot out of it, therefore, I definitely recommend it for all students.”

Overall, this program can be thoroughly described with one word, opportunity. “It gives students the opportunity to work on their associate’s degree and it really gives them insight on some post-secondary opportunities so that they can get a taste of what college is like,” said DiBenedetto. The collaboration between BHCC and MHS gives students the option to expand their knowledge of life after high school while still being able to fully participate in their everyday lives as high school students.
