The Malden Public Library Gets Into The Holiday Spirit With A Christmas Carol Movie Night

It’s the night before Christmas. The Christmas tree is glowing with decorations and lights, and the family gathers in the living room to watch Christmas classics such as Home Alone, Polar Express, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

The Malden Public Library decided to get into the holiday spirit early and host a Christmas Movie Night for December. The MPL took one classic Christmas film and screened it on the night of December 13th. The movie that was screened was A Christmas Carol, a story by Charles Dickens, that released on December 19th, 1843.

The film A Christmas Carol focuses on a character named Ebenezer Scrooge, a grumpy old man who dislikes people and only cares about the money he makes. One day on Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by three ghosts: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas future. Each ghost takes him on a trip to his past, his present life, as well as his future. Scrooge sees how his life went downhill and will continue to go downhill until he dies alone in his bed, which puts fear into his heart. This leads him to decide to be happy for once by embracing Christmas and living his best life so that when it is time to die, he will have a happy death surrounded by the people who love him most.

When entering the Maccario Room for the movie night, the seats were set up in rows, and to the left, there was a table with a beautiful display of various snacks to eat throughout the movie. “The snacks were British-themed because it is A Christmas Carol,” stated Stacy Holder, the organizer of the event.

With so much food and drinks to give out such as popcorn, ginger cookies, scones, and hot chocolate with marshmallows, as well as drinks such as Sprite, ginger ale, iced tea, coke, and water, one may question who supplies the food for events such as movie nights.

“The Friends of the Library provide the food,” stated Maryellen O’meara the president of the Friends of the Library. “The Friends of the Library is a fundraising and volunteer organization. They host book sales from all of the books that are donated to the library and the sales from the books fund programs such as the movie nights,” stated O’meara.

The movie night brought out the Christmas spirit in everybody. Oliver, a sophomore at Malden High School who attended the movie night, stated “I get into the Christmas spirit by wearing Christmas pajamas and listening to Christmas songs. I look forward to attending other events hosted by the library.”
