The philosophy, “Zero Gravity,” was invented by legendary jazz icon Wayne Shorter. “Zero Gravity is the idea of improvising from a state of true openness. Taking the risk to delve into the unknown and being open to letting the music take you to a place never explored before,” explained Chase Morrin, a member of Ize Trio.

The band formed at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute in 2019. The core members: Chase Morrin, Naseem Alatrash, and George Lernis—initially met as students and now teach at Berklee, bonding over their shared passion for music.

On October 27th, 2024, Ize Trio hosted a live concert at Saint Paul’s Parish in Malden, featuring a surprise appearance by talented singer-songwriter Heiraza. The songs they performed included Break G4S, Bright Colors on a Dark Canvas, Gul Pembe, Yagmur, and Elemeno.

The group was nothing short of amazing. They incorporated various cultural influences, as each member is rooted in diverse upbringings: Lernis, the percussionist, is from Cyprus; Alatrash, the cellist, is from Palestine; Morrin, the pianist, is from California; and Heiraza, the guest vocalist, is from Turkey. Their flavorful backgrounds and free-spirited ideologies derived from “Zero Gravity” produced an extraordinary sound.

“It was good bringing the event to Malden, unifying the community together and different ethnicities with this multicultural music,” expressed Souad Akib, an audience member. “These musicians who performed tonight are so exquisite that I wanted to share them with Malden,” added Ose Schwab, the event’s lead organizer.

After the show, there was a gathering in the church’s dining hall where people enjoyed “Moroccan goodies” made by artist Salua Gardaf, as described by Akib. “Everything worked beautifully together, even the food, you know. It was a nice mixture of sounds, music, discussion, and food,” Schwab remarked.
