Fine Arts Club: A Bold Stroke of Legacy

Though the Fine Arts Club (FAC) has been a long-time club at Malden High, its future looked uncertain after COVID-19, like many other clubs. However, thanks to now-alum Henry Zhou for taking up the mantle, the club was able to reach the hearts of the incoming students after the pandemic and secure its place in the future of the high school.

Senior Erica Lu is the current President of the club and shared that they joined the club their freshman year because they have “always had a love for art” and enjoyed “being around other creative artists.” Lu explained that although there were not many members of the club when they first joined, “the atmosphere was still lively and welcoming.”

The club also seems to be a form of catharsis for students after having to live through a global pandemic that completely changed people’s perceptions of everyday life.

Now, it is Lu’s turn to pass on the torch as new officers take over the club. After elections were held on March 26th, the new officers were chosen as follows: junior Jessica Chen as President, sophomore Cat Nguyen as Vice President, freshman Sophia Zhang as Treasurer, junior Len Nie as Secretary, and sophomore Krystalyn Vo as Social Media Coordinator. Lu further described that the club is “obviously a lot of responsibility.” However, even though “it can be rough having to manage it all, they are grateful to have the other officers for support.

Nevertheless, these new officers are sure to carry on the legacy of Lu, who always strived to “maintain the environment” that persuaded them to join as a freshmen. Lu shared some lasting sentiments for the club’s future: “I hope that the FAC still remains a welcoming and joyful club. I would also love to see more events and activities… and this year, we’ll start donating to art charities, which I hope becomes a trend for the club.”
