On June 4th, 2025, Malden Recreation hosted its first high school girls’ flag football league, marking an exciting addition to the city’s summer recreation lineup. The program will run for seven weeks, with games held on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Newman Park, located at Ferryway School on Ferry Street.
This league is open to high school girls throughout the city and welcomes participants of all skill levels. No previous experience is required. Participants will be able to learn new techniques, build teamwork, and improve their fitness, all in a supportive and fun environment.
“I don’t know all the rules yet, but I’m excited to learn and just have a good time with others,” noted freshman Gyovanna Gomes, who is trying flag football for the first time through the league.
Freshman Kayla Turner also expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m really looking forward to trying flag football this summer.” “It sounds like a great way to stay active and hang out with new friends,” she continued.
In addition to providing a space for athletic growth, the league promises to bring energy and connection to Malden’s summer evenings. With warm weather, team play, and the opportunity to meet new people from different schools, this program is designed to combine fitness with a great sense of community.
As the first program like this from Malden Rec, the upcoming league is an important step toward giving more girls in the city a chance to get involved with sports and stay active.
