The Malden Teen Center is a safe environment created primarily for Malden teens in grades 9-12 to spend time after school, however it is also open to teens from other cities. It first opened four years ago during a time of increased violence in Malden. The community felt that it was crucial for Malden to have place with a calm environment to keep Malden teens out of trouble and help them improve socially and academically. After extensive work and help from Mayor Gary Christenson, the Malden Teen Center opened in December 2012 across the street from Malden High school.
The interior design of the center makes it feel welcoming for teens as it has two living areas with couches and a TV set. The Teen Center also has a game room where there is a piano and board games.
The center’s location is ideal since it is just a few steps away from MHS for students to head over to once the school day is finished. MHS student Allan Claude expressed that “one of the reasons why [he] love[s] the teen center so much is because of how comfortable it is.” He continued to say that he enjoys hanging out with friends there after school.
The Teen Center attracts many students and has provided a safe hang out spot for students to relax in or do homework with classmates.
