“Today, I can look at myself in the mirror and be comfortable in my own skin. I know now that I’m not defined by my ethnicity. I’m Chinese but I was adopted by two white parents, who have shown me nothing but love and support. For the past two years I struggled with finding my identity…I just didn’t know where I fit in or who I fit in with. At Malden High, there are so many different types of people who come from so many different cultural backgrounds. I wasn’t worried about being, ‘Asian’, I was worried about whether I was ‘Asian’ or ‘white’. But, I realized that society needs to get rid of defining people by their race. We, as humans, are so much more than that. We are people first. We are our personalities, we are our actions, we are our experiences. Your race shouldn’t define who you are, it should only be a word that describes where you come from. If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that I am not my ethnicity. I am more than my appearance. We all are.” #humansofmaldenhigh

About the Author

Meghan Yip

Contributor

Sophomore Meghan Yip first joined the Blue and Gold to put her wild imagination and creativity to use. This year she is taking on a new position as a lead photographer for the newspaper. Yip considers herself a lover of the arts and anything art-related. Outside of school, she enjoys listening to Imagine Dragons, Halsey, Bastille, Twenty One Pilots, and Lorde, and sometimes even plays music herself on guitar, piano, and ukulele. She mainly reads young adult contemporary novels and even writes a few stories herself. While doing school work, Yip likes to put on Bob’s Burgers or Parks and Recreation on Netflix in the background. If she sets aside some free time, she watches her favorite movie, Whiplash. She hopes to put her artistic and creative skills to good use in the paper.
