Posse Profile: Audrey Goon

Ailin Toro June 6, 2018

Malden High School student Audrey Goon was one of the three seniors chosen to be a Posse scholar this year.

Posse holds three different interviews to decide whether someone is chosen to be a candidate, but not everyone is guaranteed to pass through all three rounds. Goon says that while “the interviews did not become increasingly harder,  the pressure to excel and strive continued to push [her] to try [her] best in each round”.

Goon says that when she found out she was chosen, “[her]  heart was racing and [she] was completely speechless.” She says that in that moment she “was extremely proud of what [she] had accomplished and grateful for [her]  family, friends, and past scholars who had helped [her] throughout the interview process.”

Goon was nominated by MHS alum Michelle Chung.  Goon is appreciative of Chung, and says that she “owe[s] a big part of [her] success to Chung, who ensured [her] that everything would be fine no matter the outcome of the process.”

Goon will be attending Union College, a small liberal arts school located in New York. Union College was also Goon’s first choice. She explains why by saying that after looking at all the schools offered by Posse, she “connected most to Union”.

Goon participated in many clubs throughout her time at the high school, including Key Club, YMCA Leaders, Science National Honors Society, Chemistry Club, Relay for Life Club, and Badminton Club. Goon was on the field hockey team for three years, starting her sophomore year.  Outside of school, she tutors, and does volunteer work. She also enjoys spending time with family and friends.

When asked what she will miss about high school Goon says “our amazing diverse community” is one of the top things. She also mentions that “there are also many incredible teachers at Malden High School who have helped [her] through the years that [she] will be forever thankful for”.

Goon plans on majoring in biomedical engineering when she joins Union’s class of 2022 in the fall.
