With the indoor track coming to a start in early January, the Malden High School’s track team began their season with a win over Everett for both the boys and girls.

The Golden Tornadoes faced Everett and Somerville on January 2nd at the Reggie Lewis Center. After a great fight, both the Malden boys and girls teams came out victorious against Everett with scores of 58-42 and 58-28, respectively.

Sophomore runner Oliver Jean said, “The team did great and the track meet went well.” Oliver did great, coming 14th out of 24 competitors in the long jump, which contributed to  Malden’s win over Everett.

Some highlights of the meet include junior runner Slade Harding coming in second place in the 2-mile run with a time of 11:13.59; and runners Laurene Pierre Louis Pierre, Meriam Bouchtout, Aliana Lloyd, and Vivian Onyejiaka coming in 3rd in the 4×200 with a time of 2:02.85.

Even at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, the Malden Tornadoes were shown support as they were cheered on by family, friends, teammates, and coaches.

Although the boys lost against Somerville, junior runner Woodlens Edmond believed he had a “decent” performance and that nonetheless, the track meet was fun because everyone did “amazing in their races, and all together everyone did amazing”.

With the season coming to a start, it is safe to say that it is going to be a great one due to the energy from the coaches and runners. As Coach Marc Ferrara stated, “The team is doing amazing and is on its way to the GBL”.
