Class of 26 Celebrates Senior Sunrise

As a new school year begins and the rush of stress from academics comes rolling back, it’s important that students stay tuned in with upcoming social events. The student councils at MHS have already begun to come together to discuss various events in the foreseeable future. The senior class of 2026 council, in particular, as it’s their last year, hopes to surpass expectations and find success in the final events they will host during their time in high school.

The most significant event the council has hosted so far this year has been the Senior Sunrise, which was “a big success,” volunteer coordinator Oscar Luc claimed. Senior Sunrise is an occasion where the seniors wake up as early as four in the morning to gather at one spot to watch the sun rise. This year, their Senior Sunrise was located at Waitt’s Mountain, a summit in Malden. There were “around 150 students that showed up, which was a huge accomplishment considering high school students don’t like to wake up early,” social media coordinator Amanda Granja added.

“The sunrise was a fun experience, I feel like it’s a good tradition as it reflects the start of the end of high school, and makes me appreciate the journey we’ve all gone through to get to senior year,” reflected senior Joseph Alayane.

One of the council’s main priorities is fundraising. With their main events, such as prom and graduation, coming up, it’s crucial that they have sufficient funds to plan and carry out these important occasions.

In the past, the council encountered success in hosting bake sales, which attracted valuable attention and were very successful.  So far in the school year, they’ve already taken advantage of hosting concession stands for the football and girls’ volleyball games, among hosting other fundraisers such as bake sales.

In addition, the council is currently organizing the annual Homecoming Dance, which event coordinators Fiona Youmell and Vin Chau play a large role in. They recently released the theme for homecoming, based on The Great Gatsby, and released the themes for spirit week shortly after.

Some of the most significant events the senior class is usually in charge of hosting that many look forward to are towards the end of the year, such as prom and Senior Sunset. The class of ‘26 highlights that they’re working hard to plan out these events so that their entire class can enjoy their last year of high school. Not only that, but they also plan to prioritize hosting fun events that “all grades can participate in,” emphasized Luc.

As it is their senior year, the council feels that the most important goal is to ensure that they help create “fun lasting memories for the class of 2026,” Vice President Rashmi KC emphasized. Acknowledging the academic pressure and potential worries about the future that other seniors may have, the council has made it its top priority to at least make their last year fun, memorable, and nostalgic. After all, this year is the final stepping stone until they begin their next journey in life.
