With the atmosphere getting colder, and Holidays around the corner, Malden High School’s fall sports have concluded their seasons, with the Golden Tornados football team ending their season with theirlast game on Thanksgiving Day.

Veteran players and newcomers who have shown passion for basketball come to Malden High School’s gymnasium every other Thursday, as well as stopping by the YMCA, to practice. Sophomore Kendrick Noelsaint shared, “Usually, I’ve been going to open gym for the basketball team, or sometimes I go to the YMCA, so I think I’m pretty ready for basketball season.”

MHS students who have played on the Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball teams in the previous year come to the gymnasium to practice hooping and dribbling, refining their skills from last year, while guiding and introducing the new freshmen to the MHS basketball team. Sophomore David Yohan Kintu expressed, “Some things I have done to prepare for this season are going to the YMCA to prevent any diplomatic losses.”

In the previous year, the Boys’ Varsity Basketball team ended its season with a record of 1-19 overall and finished with a 1-11 record.

With the new season, multiple players are coming back to bring their dribbling and shooting skills to the court. “We didn’t have the best basketball season last year, so I wish to play my heart out, and win games and make myself proud as well as my teammates,” Kintu elaborated on how things will be different from the previous year.

While most players who played in previous years plan to return to the court, new faces can be seen as the incoming freshmen show off their basketball skills to prove that they can be valuable players for the team.

Students also had the chance to spark their passion at the annual Prep Rally on November 25th, where each grade decided on its team’s players, having them compete in multiple events. Going from a game of tug of war to free throws, those who have an interest in basketball had a chance to compete against the other grades for a spot.

With the start of Thanksgiving break after school on the 25th of November, all that remains is the holiday break off until Monday, the first of December, where basketball players, old and new, try-out to put their skills to the test, which will determine if they will dribble, shoot, and dunk for the MHS team.
