There is a new force of gravity in the science department this year, and it’s pulling students out of their Monday morning slumps! This year, Matthew Rose joins the science faculty as Malden High’s newest physics teacher, bringing a captivating energy to his classroom through hands-on activities.
Although this is Rose’s first year at Malden, he is not new to the area. He coached in Medford but moved to Malden to teach because Malden “is one of the most diverse schools in the state outside of BPS (Boston Public Schools),” Rose claimed.
Although Rose is new to Malden High, he has already made some stellar impressions on students and his colleagues.
Sean Tamarisk, a science coach involved in Rose’s hiring process, claimed that Rose is very well-versed in different content areas of physics, highlighting his versatility in being able to teach so many topics as “exciting.” Tamarisk also noted that Rose stood out as “very energetic and very enthusiastic about teaching and physics.”

Rose’s energy and enthusiasm do not stop there. Outside of school, Rose is a devoted “girl dad” dedicated to learning and mastering new hairstyles such as French braids and fishtails. Rose also has a passion for sports and staying active, as he stated, “I’m a former runner, baseball player, and triathlete.” Additionally, he mentioned his dislike of being still for prolonged periods of time.
Rose’s active passion and lifestyle are shown through his interactions with students. He is described by his students as sarcastic, fun, helpful, and straightforward. Junior Maria Barbosa Gadeia recalled: “If you have a question, he’s going to try to help you at all times.”

Although he is straightforward, Rose is flexible and approachable, and not afraid to prioritize a collaborative classroom environment. Junior Vanessa Nguyen expressed that“In most science classes, you won’t get this much fun; you won’t get this much freedom to do what you want, but for him, he lets you hang out, work with the people you want.” She emphasized how “it’s more like a community type of class.”
Alongside Rose’s goal to connect with his community, students, and other teachers, he plans on making a difference. He plans on updating the physics curriculum, making sure it’s fair, but also a challenge for students. Specifically, Rose mentioned his “big aspirations” in adding AP Physics C as a possible option for the future.

As the school year pushes forward, Malden High School is so lucky to have a teacher as dedicated to helping students move forward as Rose is.
