MTEC Relocates Tutoring Program

Jennica Ruan March 1, 2018

The Malden Teen Enrichment Center (MTEC), located across the street from Malden High School, holds a tutoring program, which has gotten off to a great start this year. The program moved from MTEC to the Malden High School Library so that it would be more accessible for students and so that students could concentrate better since the Enrichment Center also runs other activities and events. The tutoring program runs after school every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 to 4:30.

The tutoring program is run by Arlene Ceppetelli, who, along with student volunteers, tutors students who need help in subjects they struggle in. Ceppetelli was also the advisor for the program when it was at the Malden Teen Enrichment Center, which is coordinated by Cathy Macmullin. Ceppetelli would like the program to expand as it already has by having it in the Malden High Library, since it gives the program more time and space.

A major advantage in having students tutor instead of teachers is that students can learn from a different perspective and understand a different way to do their work. Along with student-on-student partnerwork, new friendships and bonds have formed. This also helps student athletes in need of help to keep their grades up to continue playing sports.

Ceppetelli taught at Malden High for thirty-five years and retired about six years ago. She has always had a passion for teaching and caring for “the well-being of students”. She hopes that the program can build confidence in the student community.

If you would like to get academic help, you can come in and do your work as you please for an available time of two hours, two days a week. Tutors cover a range of topics including English, Spanish, Math, History, and much more. If all the tutors are busy, then Ceppetelli steps in to help in her knowledge of education. Since starting the program this year it began with about 15 tutors and now have  grown to 21 tutors. It is never too late to help out or get help from others. Everyone is welcome to come in or, if needed, to help tutor as well.
