Malden Democratic City Committee

Quyen Le April 4, 2018

The Malden Democratic City Committee, also known as MDCC, is Malden’s Democratic Party organization that volunteers to promote democratic values in Malden. The Malden Democrats help to elect democratic candidates in federal, state, and city elections. They also promote policies that advance the group’s goals. Additionally, they inform and engage Malden voters.

Greg Lucy, one of the officers, explains that “there are 5 Executive Officers in the committee, Chair, 2 Vice-chair (one male and one female), Secretary and Treasurer”. Officers are elected by MDCC membership. As Chair, Greg Lucy oversees the operations of the committee, appoints subcommittees, and runs monthly meeting. Every year there is a caucus to elect delegates to the state convention, and “every 2 years [they] have a reorganization meeting where the Officers need to run again along with the 8 Ward Chairs”. This year this event is on April 7, 2018.

To discuss, work on and share their inputs on these topics, MDCC members meet monthly. Their last meeting was on March 3. According to Lucy, the committee is currently “writing [their] bylaws” and they “currently operate under the State’s bylaws, but every city has different needs so that will be important when [they] bring a final document for approval by the MDCC members. [They] plan on having that vote [at their] May 12th meeting”.

Lucy explained that “most cities and towns have a Democratic Committee and they are an extension of the State Democratic Committee”. Currently there are 137 official Malden Democratic City Committee members.

The committee has a friendly atmosphere. They are a family that works towards a common goal but possesses and input different opinions.

Lucy stated that “since the Presidential Election of 2016 there has been a definite uptick in people wanting to get involved with the Democratic City Committee.”
