On May 11, after a thorough yet brief search for a new principal for Malden High School, first-year superintendent John Oteri chose Chris Mastrangelo to become the next principal. Mastrangelo had been serving as interim principal of Malden High School since the resignation of Ted Lombardi earlier this year.

Mastrangelo had been the Boyle House Principal for several years and becoming interim principal, had taken on almost four times as many students as he had as a house principal. Three candidates were chosen from by Oteri, including Mastrangelo, Purnima Vadhera, and Timothy McCarron.

In a statement given in the Nedlam News, Mastrangelo thanks staff and students for their support already, and their support to come. The full statement is pasted on page 28.

“To All Malden High School Staff, Students, and Administrators:

Hello everyone,

Today, as they say, is the first day of the rest of our lives. Personally, it is another “first”… my first day as Principal. On Friday, I was informed by Superintendent Oteri that I have been selected as the next Malden HIgh School Principal. I could not be more humbled, honored and at the same time, excited and energized by this appointment. Further, I am amazed and impressed by all the planning, many hours of hard work and diligence by each and every administrator, teacher and non-instructional staff member, student and members of the public who participated in the lengthy and detailed principal search process. Particularly I would like to commend Malden Public Schools STEM Director Dr. Dias for his professional and highly efficient supervision of the process as chair of the MHS Principal Search Committee. To coin another well-used phrase, “the future begins now,” and indeed it does. In the short time I have served as Interim Principal, we have already made some important, definitive strides. We have many more to make and there is so much more work we must still do together. Words cannot express the gratitude I have for all of your support so far and the anticipated support I ask and hope for moving forward. This is truly a special place, with amazing students and staff. Let us continue the journey together.”
