Malden High has introduced many new and unique clubs this year. One such club is The Henna Club, which had an information meeting for members to join and learn about the culture behind the club.

The club is run by Juniors Aanchal Kumar (president), and Kayla Cadet (vice-president) with Mary Liberge as the advisor.

Kumar came up with the idea for a henna club due to its importance in Indian culture. Henna is applied during many important Indian ceremonies like weddings, festivals, etc. She wanted people to “learn more about Indian culture and art.” Cadet hopes the club will be a good learning experience for everyone that is fun.

The officers will teach members “basic techniques on how to apply henna on their hands.” Kumar is planning to have fundraisers and events in the future for members to be able to volunteer at. The club has come up with ideas to sell henna cones and apply henna on faculty and students, to raise money for the club and its future endeavours.

Cadet’s goal for the club is to “learn and grow in [their] experience.” She hopes by the end of the year, the members will be able to learn enough to apply the techniques in teaching others. Kumar aspires for the same goal and “for students to learn more about Indian culture.”

As the leading officers of the club, Kumar and Cadet are in charge of teaching “students basic techniques and steps on how to apply henna.” Kumar makes the cones and the henna for the club, as well as buying the merchandise to supply the club.

To join the club, there is a membership fee of one dollar. Joining the club gives members access to participate in events and activities that the officers will provide. Students who join will be able to practice and learn from each other. Cadet sees the club members as acquaintances helping each other rather than a student, teacher relationship.

Kumar is expecting to “[have] a henna competition and the winner will receive a mystery prize.” She hopes to have the competition by the end of the year. All students are welcomed to join and learn about a new experience.
