Basketball Summer League Shoots Off for Varsity Girls

Aundrea Cifuentes June 7, 2024

Malden High School’s Varsity Girls Basketball Team is getting ready for a busy summer, preparing to compete in the annual Summer League.

This seven-week-long league runs from June 20th to August 14th. Games will be held every Wednesday in the Malden High’s Finn Gym. The league provides exciting matchups, a competitive environment and the chance to be crowned the best by the end of the season.

The Summer League features some GBL (Greater Boston League) teams, including Everett, Revere, Somerville, Medford, and Mystic Valley but Mystic Valley isn’t GBL. This lineup of teams ensures a diverse and competitive lineup of opponents. It gives the players the sense of being able to play in a competitive mode as they’re competing but not in a tournament.

Now, there are no designated practices for the Summer League, the varsity girls have been keeping up with their skills through ongoing captain-led practices, which are available twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6.

For the varsity girls, the Summer League isn’t really an option. It’s seen as a crucial step for the athletes to improve their game, build team chemistry, and get a head start on the upcoming basketball season. “It’s a fun league and fun thing to participate in,” said Madison Cook.

Every Wednesday at Malden High’s Finn Gym, you can look forward to a game as the varsity girls’ play against a different city. With teamwork and determination, this team is set for the upcoming summer league.
