Class of ’27 Prepares for Junior Year with Annual Election

Hannah Coggswell May 30, 2025

Over the past two months, MHS has held Student Council class elections. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors all ran for different positions to be a part of the student council for their class. There were many good candidates this year, but only a few can be in office. For the class of 2027, there were 10 positions that they were allowed to run for: President, Vice President, Junior Varieties Coordinators, Event Coordinators, Social Media Coordinators, Treasurer, Volunteer Coordinator, Art Director, and Secretary.

President – Amelia Berliner

The role of the president is vital. The president helps plan events, leads meetings, and ensures everyone’s ideas are heard. They work with other class officers, students, and teachers to organize activities like fundraisers or big events.

Last election, Amelia Berliner was the Vice President for the class of 2027. This year, she is stepping up to take on a bigger role.

“I chose to run for president rather then vice president because a lot of my values didn’t align with the current position the council was in, which motivated me to take a stand to become president to create an environment where my, and other councilors’ values can be heard and thrive,” Berliner stated.

“I was inspired to be part of the student council due to the qualities it takes to create a successful council, along with how a successful council impacts a class’s future. In other words, I believe being successful in the student council takes a certain kind of person in charge in order to succeed, and if doesn’t contain people with those select characteristics, then there will be many consequences for the councils failures, including cheap prom or expensive tickets, along with expensive caps and gowns,” Berliner advocated. “Therefore, I was inspired to take matters into my own hands to ensure that the council will be successful so our class of students can reap the benefits.”

Vice President – Rosalyn Ruan

The vice president supports the president in leading the council and takes charge when the president is unavailable. They help coordinate meetings, organize things, and make sure everything is going smoothly among the council members.

“My biggest goal I want to achieve in my position is to actually cater to the other half of the student body because that’s what really inspired me to run again. My vision is that I find ways to make those people feel included and heard,” Ruan explained.

“The biggest thing I’m focusing on is supporting the other officers as much as I can. I feel like it’s my responsibility to really catch up and also help promote as much as I can because junior year, especially [with] JVs, is such an important and memorable year, and I really want it all to go smoothly,” Ruan expressed.

“I chose to run for this position specifically because I have a certain vision of how I wanted things to be done and executed. I also wanted to be there to support the president’s vision as well,” Ruan concluded.

Secretary – Cat Nguyen

The secretary keeps accurate records of all meetings, decisions, and upcoming plans. They handle important documentation and help distribute information to council members and the class.

With her second success in being elected for this position, Cat Nguyen is going to contribute to the class of 2027 this upcoming year in so ways.

“I was inspired to join Student Council because I’ve always wanted to make a positive difference and improve my grade. I enjoy working with others, organizing events, and finding ways to make school more enjoyable for everyone. Being part of the student council has not only given me a chance to develop my communication skills and given me a deeper understanding of responsibility, but also a group of girls that I love working with,” Nguyen stated.

“My biggest challenge I faced while running was balancing my time between campaigning and my other commitments. The campaigning week was stressful for me, balancing sports and an upcoming AP exam was stressful, but I understood that if I wanted this position, I had to be able to balance the rest of my extracurriculars. It was a lot to handle, but the stress was worth being able to help my class through any means necessary to achieve the goals we wanted to make,” Nguyen vocalized.

“The biggest thing I’m focusing on as Secretary is helping our class raise as much funding as possible to ensure we can plan well-organized, meaningful, and memorable events. At Malden High School, each class isn’t automatically given a budget. It’s entirely up to the Student Council to raise the funds needed for activities, dances, and other important events. That’s a big responsibility, and I want to make sure our efforts are not only successful but also efficient. By staying organized, promoting fundraisers effectively, and keeping clear records of our progress, I want to help ensure our grade has the resources it needs to enjoy the best possible high school experience,” Nguyen finished.

Treasurer – Sofia Vargas

The treasurer manages the council’s finances, including budgeting for events and tracking income and expenses. They also work with fundraisers, making sure financial goals are met.

“I wanted to be a part of STUCO because I wanted to feel included in a community and get to know more people. I always thought it would be fun to help organize the funding for our class for a fun high school experience,” Vargas explained.

“The biggest goal I want to achieve as treasurer is to ensure that we have enough money for big events during our senior year: prom, graduation, homecoming, etc,” Vargas said.

“The biggest thing I’m focusing on is evenly distributing our funds for current events we have planned to make sure that our long-term funding is sufficient,” Vargas commented. “I feel a sense of relief that people trust me to be their treasurer for a second year.”

Event Coordinators – Emilly Weihrauch and Chelmie Hyppolite

Event coordinators plan and execute class events like dances, fundraisers, and spirit weeks. They handle logistics such as locations for events, supplies, and schedules, making sure each event runs smoothly.

Emilly Weihrauch and Chelmie Hyppolite, who are also Lead Reporters for The Blue and Gold, were both re-elected for this position, with no opposing candidates.  They are responsible for all events that the class of 2027 decides to participate in within the next two years. The duo campaigned together during the elections, demonstrating their compatibility and creativity when working with one another.

Social Media Coordinators – Evelyn Ruan and Raquel Ferreira

Social media coordinators manage the class’s social media by creating and posting updates, announcements, and promotional content. They use platforms like Instagram or TikTok to engage students and increase event turnout.

“What inspired me to be a part of the student council was the fact that I wanted to be more involved with the school, and wanted to be more out there. I see myself as a creative and collaborative person, so I wanted to bring my skills into doing something that would help the class of 2027,” Ruan explained, who is also a member of The Blue and Gold.

“I was a part of the student council in 7th and 8th grade, along with sophomore year, and I had a wonderful time, so I decided to run again for next year,” Ferreira stated.

“My biggest goal that I want to be able to achieve as social media coordinator is to be able to promote as much as possible on our platforms, so that we can raise money. I want to make funny or interesting videos that will get people to come to our events, overall expanding our social media presence.” Ruan voiced.

“I think the biggest goal that I want to achieve is having a very good JVs or Prom post for our social media to interest people in coming to these events,” Ferreira mentioned.

Volunteer Coordinator – Sofia Evoras

The volunteer coordinator recruits, organizes, and communicates with students willing to help at class events and initiatives. They make sure all roles are filled and volunteers are prepared and informed. Evoras was re-elected for this position in the recent election.

“I was inspired to join STUCO because I wanted to be a part of my class community to a greater extent. Since last year was my first year as part of the council, I found that getting to participate in so many different planning projects was fulfilling for me, and I wanted to continue that,” announced Evoras.

“With my job as volunteer coordinator, my job primarily comes into play when events are coming around. Next year, as a junior, the council will be running JVS, so my primary goals will be to create a positive experience among volunteers at our hosted events, along with getting more students in the class of ‘27 involved in the first place,” Evoras spoke.

“I chose to run for this position specifically for a variety of reasons, but I would say the main thing is that I know the importance of volunteering in a personal way and for the future. Volunteering is incredibly important when applying for colleges or programs, and I wanted to be able to help others experience that,” Evoras detailed. “I also wanted to have this specific role of volunteer coordinator because I would say I am fairly good at tracking the hours and keeping them organized.”

Art Director – Trini Le

The art director designs visuals for posters, banners, and event decorations, bringing creativity to projects, making class events visually appealing and exciting.

Trini Le is ready to display her artistic abilities as art director for the class of 2027!

“Art and fashion are big parts of my identity, and I felt like being STUCO’s art director would allow me to put those skills to the test,” Le voiced.

“I’m excited to be in the office, and I can’t wait to get started on some new projects,” exclaimed Le.

“Running against people I was either close with or held a lot of respect for made me extremely hesitant to campaign, but I really love art and creating in general, so I decided to go for art director,” Le mentioned.

JV Coordinators – Wongel Yohannes and Kamani Gomes

Every year, the annual Junior Varieties show is held, where students can showcase their talents and where clubs can show off performances they have been working on for months.

Junior Varieties is a big deal in Malden High. Though Wongel Yohannes and Kamani Gomes have lots of responsibilities, their ideas and dedication will hopefully be able to produce an amazing show.

“I was inspired to join the student council because my dream is to become a film director, and I personally believe that it would be a perfect fit for me! I heard it’s a lot of hard work, but my dream is to put on a show, and I’m determined,” Gomes explained.

“I really want to make next year JV’s something memorable and something that can really bring everyone from our school together, it’s one of the big events at our school, and I want everyone attending to really enjoy it,” Yohannes commented.

“The biggest challenge I faced running for student council was the competition and thinking I wasn’t good enough to win. I almost dropped out of the race because I thought there was no way I would get the opportunity to be on stuco,” Gomes mentioned.

“I really wanted to be more involved in my community, and being the junior variety coordinator sounded like something I would really enjoy,” mentioned Yohannes.

“I wanted to run for JV coordinator specifically because my dream is to be a film director, to work in any kind of production is really my dream. As JV coordinator, this brings me one step closer to my dream,” Gomes concluded.
