The Nurses’ Role at Malden High

Aaliyah Nowlan November 24, 2025

When you walk into the nurse’s office, you are met with tranquility,  knowing that you are in good hands. The nurse’s office is not only a place where students can attend to their medical needs, but it is also a reliable support system for any students who may need it.

At Malden High School, the nurses’ main priority is caring for the needs of every student and ensuring they feel safe and supported. These nurses aim to help students feel better, physically and mentally.

The nurses strive to provide the comfort each student needs when they are feeling under the weather. Whether it’s aiding students by giving them medicine or an ice pack, letting them rest for the day, or resolving to call parents to pick students up, the nurses never fail to ensure that a student’s health comes first.

Jillian Gay, one of the MHS nurses who previously worked at the Cheverus School, stated, “The nurse’s office sees over 100 kids a day.” The quantity of visits can be overwhelming for the three nurses, even more so if one nurse is out.

Similarly, Nurse Sheila Butler expressed her fondness for working at the high school and being able to see the kids who go here every day. She has been a part of  Malden High for seven years now, having previously worked at a neurosurgical clinic. She shared how “the specialties of working” at the high school are more “flexible,”  because she does not have to “sit at a desk all day” and can “get up and walk around.”

If you ever feel unwell, the nurse’s office is always a place you can rely on to support you.
