Starting a New Era: The Making of the Social Studies Club

Are you interested in learning about American philosophers? Do you love learning about history in general? If so, the Social Studies club is the place for you and your creativity to thrive.

The idea for this club was created 4 months ago by seniors Beniel Eugene and Faiyaz Alam. Malden High School had a history club back in the 2024-2025 school year, advised by Social Studies teacher James Hill, but it has never had a Social Studies club.

The History Club was a “club that has helped students with their historical knowledge while providing a fun way to get students involved in politics and be more aware of what they are learning throughout their history class,” based on a previous Blue and Gold article

Social Studies contains a broader view of history. History focuses on past events and important figures, while Social Studies focuses on connecting the past to current events.

Club advisor and Social Studies teacher Richard Tivnan thinks “ it’s important to have some kind of club like this.” Even though he is only there to host the club, he still helped with the process of starting the new club.

This club would allow students to grasp a deeper understanding of social studies topics as a whole, enhancing their understanding of what they have learned and what they could learn from others. Another benefit is the Honors Society program. This program recognizes students for their academics and provides them scholarship opportunities.

To make this club more fun and interactive, the club plans to go to historical reenactments and have activities called “hunting week,” where members can bring an item that relates to the topic of discussion, which allows modern items to connect to the past.

The objective of this club is fairly similar to that of the history club. Eugene stated his biggest goal for the club “is to have as much fun as possible” and to help others and himself “learn about history and understand the things that built society today.”

An active discussion on the next steps for the social studies club.

“The first year, it was hard to get anyone new, because I think one of the things that’s true about clubs is that people choose what clubs to join in part from their history knowledge,” Hill stated about the History club.

The Social Studies club, so far, with ten members, has been facing this issue and is actively working on recruiting more people. As of now, they’re “working on the fundraising process,” which consists of planning bake sales and organizing the topics they will talk about during their future meetings.

The Social Studies club is an inclusive club for all. If you’re interested in learning more about history, join the Google Classroom using this code: hx4t6bx2
