Shivers washed over everyone in attendance as the Boys Baseball Team warmed up. Bats lined up against the fence near the on-deck circle. Malden High School travelled to Somerville, leaving with a 10-1 victory.
The win was not the only thing they gained; they gained a new senior Captain as well. Gino Spadafora expressed his gratitude as he was announced captain, where he explained how he is going “to keep working harder now and for the rest of the season,” keeping in mind that they still have a long way left till the end of the season.
“He’s very vocal, very encouraging. His teammates respect him. He does a lot of work behind the scenes. He takes care of a lot of stuff for us, like communications and when we do fundraising; he’s always like the leader,” Coach Frecker said, filling the bucket with compliments for the new captain. “Thought it was time to give him an honor that he deserved,” Freck finished.

Senior captain Ryan Macmahon, “worked as hard as he could on the mound and just got through as much of the game as he could. He worked with the amount of pitches that he could throw, being on a limited pitch count,” Spadafora said.

The game continued as the gap between Malden and Somerville increased. “Ay, caramba!” the team would yell, expressing their excitement for every score, or, “Ding!” there goes another inning. With Sophomore Nick D’Anna hitting a triple in the second inning, it was followed up by a “Woo!” from not only the crowd but from the team themselves.
“Nick D’anna pulled together three hits, four RBIs, and three runs, and was a great offensive contribution to the team,” Freck complimented, handing the MVP of the game title to D’Anna.

With their previous game against Medford, having to go against a tough opponent they made sure the only thing on their mind should be “the sole focus on winning.” With the win at the end, Spadafora believed their weeks of practice really “paid off.”
With the school year hitting its last base, the baseball team continues to fight as the Spring Sports season closes to the end.
