The Malden High Boys’ Varsity Soccer team suffered their first loss of the season on September 17th, falling 2-0 to rival Everett at Pine Banks.
The Tornados entered the matchup with a 4-0 record after starting the season with wins over Northeast Metro RVT, Malden Catholic, Lynn English, and Somerville just two days before facing Everett. The team had built early momentum heading into the matchup, which made the loss a tough result for Malden.
The matchup against Everett brought a different level of intensity, as it was “a hard and physical game,” Senior Captain and midfielder Abdulmohaimem Kalefa described. The players were familiar with one another, adding extra competitiveness to the game. The tension in the air was noticeable, as both teams battled for possession and tried to create opportunities in the attacking half.
Malden worked to stay organized defensively while looking for chances to move the ball forward. The Tornados continued to compete throughout the game, but Everett was able to capitalize on its opportunities.

“Our team is like a family; it is our second family to us. We motivate each other through our ups and downs, and we stay together as a team throughout everything,” Junior Captain Adam Namir and midfielder expressed.
For Malden, the loss to Everett was a setback, but it was only one game in a long season. “If we had handled our emotions better, we would’ve played better,” reflected Senior Captain and midfielder Juan Caballero.
With the majority of the season still ahead, the Tornados have plenty of opportunities to continue to build up and compete for wins. Despite their mistakes, “We still motivated each other throughout the game,” Caballero added.

Although Malden left Pine Banks without a victory, the team’s 4-0 start conveyed the potential the team has already developed.
The Tornados’ ability to stay motivated after the loss will be important as they continue through the season. “Both the team and I will use this game for motivation this season,” Caballero said.
Looking ahead, the Tornados are already anticipating their next matchup with Everett, “ready to get [their] get back.”
