As part of their monthly movie nights, the Malden Public Library screened the movie “Get Out” on October 25th. Stacy Holder, who runs the movie nights, chose the movie because Halloween is coming up and this movie is good satire on society.

Five years ago, Holder began holding movie screenings at the library for community youth and adults alike. Each event is an attempt to show different kind of movies like action, horror, comedy, and romance for Malden community members and their friends to come and relax.

The director of the Malden Public Library wanted to start a monthly movie night with drinks and snacks like popcorn, cookies, and candy. The events are free so people don’t have to spend a lot of money on movie tickets and just go for a good time with friends and have snacks as they enjoy the movie.

Holder says that she really enjoys movie night and seeing people from the community go an participate. Since a variety of people of different age groups and demographics attend each event, she tries to show movies that appeal to a wide variety of preferences. Last month, the library screened “Wonder Woman”, and fifty two people attended the event. Holder said that “Wonder Woman was a really great movie that people enjoyed watching”.

Holder sometimes plans the event around a theme which dictates the snacks, the movie, and the decorations.

Other than the monthly movie nights held by Holder, the library also holds movie screenings for teens, an event planned by Patrick Brennan. The teen movie screenings take place at a different more convenient time for students and the movies shown appeal more to their demographic.

The Friends of the Malden Public Library helps fund the movie nights, as well many other events the library holds, like the recent Book Sale. The Friends are people who are community members who help donate and fund events while also raising money for the Malden Public Library itself. They also help to fundraise for the library by providing community members with discounts on museum passes, langue resources, supplies for children programs, books and graphic novels for young adults, CDs, DvDs, large-print books, and many other things. Anyone can become a Friend by filling out an official form at the Malden Public Library at 36 Salem St, Malden.
