Springing Into the Girls’ Tennis Season

Jennica Ruan April 3, 2018

Spring has begun and so has the tennis season. The girls tennis team had, record-wise, an off season last year but is hoping for a better outcome this year. With Senior Tiffany Yu and Senior Hongli Zheng as captains, led by Head Coach Cheryl Camassa.

Tryouts were interrupted due to the weather and only four to five spots were open for new players. The team consists of twelve returning players and about four new players.

Tiffany Yu is ending her senior year with the tennis team and has been playing since freshman year. This year in particular is special for her because she is a captain. As captain she holds many responsibilities in helping the team such as the decision making during tryouts and helping the players improve. Yu’s goal for this season is “To win, but mostly connect as a whole team” and to “not get discouraged if [we] lose”.

Camassa has been coaching girls tennis at Malden High School for two years now. Her goal for the team is to “Have fun. [They] might not win every match” but “as long as the girls are learning and growing in this sport while having fun, it’s a win for [her].”

With new members joining the team, Yu is very impressed with the dedication some of them have to improve. As a captain, she plans on encouraging her team more and helping them when needed. The bond of the team is one of the strongest assets because of the encouragement they all receive from each other when they play. Yu looks forward to improving the team also by working on form and the team’s skills. Yu looks forward to their first match against North Reading because it is always a challenge and tests the team’s skills.

The Malden High Girls Tennis team have a match on April 2, against North Reading at North Reading High School.
