MHS Hosts First Instrument Drive

Olivia Descilien December 12, 2019

On November 16th, an instrument drive occurred at the Malden High School Jenkins Auditorium. The purpose of this event was to get enough instruments for the band program, middle school, and high school so that those who could not afford to rent instruments can play in the band due to the high prices of renting an instrument.

Erin O’Brien-Mazza, a band director at MHS, is one of the advisers that played a part in this event. She claims her goal for this event was to get enough people to donate their old instruments and provide for the students to use for the band. She stated that this was one of the first instrument drives they had set up. She feels as though they did “really well” because they got about 20 instruments through donations. Mazza is interested in setting up this event maybe once in every “few years” to ensure that all the students get enough instruments if they wanted to play a part in the bands.

Not only was Mazza playing a part in this occasion but she also stated she had the support of Mr. George Weithman, who teaches at Ferryway and Beebe, as well as Jeremy Hachten, who is the band teacher in Salemwood. They provided music for the event and in the end, it went “as planned.”
