The Beginning of the 2020-2021 School Year

Sandra Rivadeneira October 26, 2020

The 2020-2021 school year is looking a little different this year. With the COVID-19 pandemic still at large, for the safety of staff, students and their families, Malden High has been tackling online learning. Having school from the comfort of our own homes sometimes isn’t that great, as a lot of us have noted through our experiences, however, as a student body we must power through to complete what is surely to be a historic school year.

Due to the many unique situations that families’ in the community may be encountering, the administration has made certain aspects of student life more lenient.

This new format has been a very big change for everyone. Although it was an unforeseen circumstance, the Malden High community has adapted to the changes that have been brought upon us. One of the largest and most exciting aspects of student life here at Malden High are sporting events. For obvious reasons, the start time of the sports season has been altered. News that the city of Malden is re-entering the red zone has pushed back the winter sports season whereas the fall sport season has been moved to start after the spring sports season. Timeline wise, everything seems to be very up in the air.

Similarly for clubs, electives classes and other school related social activities, the pandemic has hindered their ability to work as they normally would. Despite the obstacles, some clubs are still continuing their weekly meetings. Classes such as band and choral arts have been using an app called SmartMusic to send recordings to their teachers. School related activities have mostly been postponed until further dates. Small sacrifices are needed for the safety of our city.

As for The Blue and Gold, we plan to continue to produce our content as we’ve done for over 100 years. Although circumstances are very different, our reporters are going to continue to conduct interviews, search out stories, and produce quality journalism about Malden High and the city of Malden during these historic times. We will adapt, focusing on a lot of digital and social media work, as well as producing some form of a print edition and we will continue to write stories that are important to us.

The Blue and Gold staff is excited to welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year. We hope you and your loved ones stay safe, stay healthy and stay inside!

Signed,

Julie Yu, Editor-In-Chief
