Jewelry Club Shines Way into Malden High

In a school as big and diverse as Malden High, it is not a surprise that creativity and authenticity is something that is commonly shared among the student body. However, being able to express that individuality in an open and safe environment may be harder for many. In efforts to resolve this issue, the new addition to Malden High’s variety of clubs promises to produce that safe environment.

The club’s leadership positions: Co-Founders Rashmi KC & Oscar Luc; Secretary Gabriella Lemus; Social Media Coordinator Fiona Youmell; Art Director Destiny Leon; Treasurers Orit Abel & Sophia Chen

Jewelry Club is meant to serve as an open space for students of all grades to come together and express their creativity through a form of art. ”We’re a very open club where everyone and anyone is able to express themselves and shape the club into something that matches their desires,” said co-founder Rashmi KC. Every Monday at 2:30 in room H308, students meet and make jewelry for themselves and their community.

”The thing about jewelry is that it’s something that is associated with almost every culture and is embedded in many different practices; that’s what makes it so beautiful and inclusive, which is what our goal is for this club to be,” said co-founder Oscar Luc.

Regardless of the club’s short existence, they have wasted no time on getting started. They recently hosted a bake sale just a few days after the announcement of their club: “Our first fundraiser went better than expected… we hope to continue to have successful fundraisers in order to build the club,” said KC. Fundraising is one of the main goals for the club so that they can upgrade in terms of what they produce. “For now we’re only making general stuff like necklaces, and bracelets, but further down the line we hope to make more advanced pieces such as earrings, rings, keychains, etc.”

As for the future of the club, it is not just the officers who are excited. “I expected a very quiet space but it was very lively and the officers were very welcoming. Staying after school on a Monday didn’t seem like something I was interested in, but after taking part in that one meeting it’s safe to say that I’ll be returning,” said sophomore Nour Howard, who joined the club for “my love for jewelry and accessories” but is intrigued to stay due to the family-like atmosphere that has already been established.

There’s no doubt that there’s nothing but success in store for this new club and its members. For those interested in joining the club, their Instagram is @mhsjewelryclub, or join their Google Classroom using the code rnodpn5 for more information and updates on future events and meetings.
