Malden High has a wide variety of opportunities in the form of clubs, activities, and other programs for students to participate in. The Engineering Club has taken it upon themselves to promote their club to students, with their second bake sale. While they did have a late start, they were able to pull off a successful bake sale.
The club’s main goal was to get their name out there. They are a small club and are always welcoming new members. Vice President Megyn Ta expressed, “we want to advocate that no matter where you come from, or what level of skill you may or may not think you have, you are more than welcome to join!” Ta hopes that students will be more interested in joining the Engineering Club, once they see them in action.
“We just want people to set foot in engineering and STEM, especially the girls at our school. We know that there is a large population of girls who want to get into STEM, they just don’t know how, or are too afraid,” said Ta. While it might be scary to join, the club is ready to welcome anyone who has even the smallest interest in engineering.

Planning fundraisers like this is not always easy. Most students are always busy, so finding a time to meet was hard. The Engineering Club decided to add a creative twist to their bake sale by incorporating a photo booth in which students could buy a polaroid photo of themself with their friends. The club members spent three days making their photo booth, which they said was stressful but worth it as they plan on reusing it.
For the bake sale they made many homemade treats like brownies, chocolate muffins and a variety of different cookies, which all ended up being a hit with the student body.

The club has been in need of more funds recently for engineering competitions and more materials for the members to use. Club President Alejandra Fernandez mentioned the upcoming National Geographic slingshot competition and how important it is that they get funds for that. Due to this need for funds their main goal was to make at least $100 on this bake sale, which ended up being successful.
“The bake sale went amazing, people were very interested in it. They had many questions and comments. It also really helped unite the engineering community, it was definitely an interesting and fun experience,” stated Fernandez. Evidently, the bake sale was a big success in informing people about the club. They have gotten quite a few new members since then and officers and members alike are excited about future events.
The Engineering Club believes they have succeeded in many different aspects. They were able to reach their goals and also gain attention. Treasurer Susila Wong commented, “Personally, I believe that the bake sale went well—although not as much as the previous one. Nonetheless, the Engineering Club will definitely have more bake sales in the future, and we will only improve and do better with more and more experience.”
