Everlasting Diversity Within MHS: Struggles of Adjustment

When you step into Malden High, the diversity of the students is one of the main aspects most people seem to notice. Students come from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, making the school a mix of traditions, languages, and faces. Malden High is a vibrant melting pot of cultures, where students from all walks of life come together to learn.

For instance, a student who attended a private school in Nepal until the age of seven experienced a notable shift upon moving to Malden. In Nepal, uniforms were mandatory, where in contrast at Malden High, students have the freedom to wear what they choose. This adjustment can be particularly striking for those who have come from places where uniforms are common, such as in Puerto Rico.

Upon arriving in Malden, the student noticed a difference in the social dynamics compared to Nepal. In their home country, they felt welcomed and included, but in Malden, especially among other Nepalis, they often felt excluded. This feeling might stem from language barriers, which are a significant hurdle for many immigrants in the United States.

Malden High has made continuous efforts to celebrate diverse cultures through events such as Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month; however, there is room for improvement in terms of representation. The focus of the celebration often lies on Eastern Asian countries, often leaving out countries like Nepal. Malden High could enhance its inclusivity by highlighting a broader range of cultures, ensuring that every student feels represented and included.

Beyond cultural diversity, Malden High is also a place where students of different sexual orientations and gender identities find a supportive environment. The school has various clubs and organizations aimed at fostering understanding and acceptance. These groups provide safe spaces for students to express themselves. For example, the Rainbow Lions Club gives students a chance to discuss issues related to sexuality and gender.

The presence of these diverse groups enriches the school community, promoting a culture of acceptance and mutual respect. However, there is always more work to be done.

Continued efforts to educate students and staff about different cultures and oppression can help bridge gaps and create a more inclusive environment. In addition to these continued efforts, the school could integrate more comprehensive curricula that address these topics and organize events that celebrate the full spectrum of diversity within the school in order to further enhance inclusivity.

While Malden High has made significant strides in embracing diversity, there is always room for growth. By continuing to highlight and celebrate the myriad cultures and identities that make up its student body, Malden High can ensure that every student feels seen, heard, and valued.
