Making a difference does not always require a big event; in this case, all it required was a classroom, crayons, cards, and a club.
On December 11th, Malden High’s Glamour Pals members gathered in Mr. DiBenedetto’s room Br487 to make holiday cards in order to connect g with seniors. “Something as simple as making cards tells them that they are not alone,” expressed president Rosalyn Ruan. She shared that many people do not acknowledge how much isolation can affect older adults, which is why small gestures such as handwritten cards can have such a significant meaning. PR officer Evelyn Ruan, added that the cards’ purpose was to make the seniors feel “happy and warm” and to “brighten their day.”
Throughout the meeting, the atmosphere in the classroom was described as peaceful and welcoming, allowing members to work on their cards while talking with each other. Ruan described the mood as “very chill and comfortable,” noting that there was enough time for the members to take their time on creating their cards while socializing. Sophomore Vinh Pham shared that his favorite part of the activity was writing the messages because of how it felt more personal and heartfelt considering someone would actually read them. The relaxed setting helped turn the meeting into a warm shared experience as opposed to a typical club meeting.
Treasurer Meybelin Gaudron explained that service to seniors is a core part of the club because elder isolation is a prominent issue.. The event helped some of the newer members develop a better understanding of the club’s goals and how simple actions still make significant differences.
In addition to the emotional impact, the meeting served as preparation for future events with local senior citizens. President Ruan shared that the cards will help strengthen the Glamour Pal’s connection with upcoming visits. She explained that the cards act as a small introduction, helping the seniors and students feel connected to one another before meeting in person. Despite scheduling challenges earlier in the year, the meeting brought members together around a shared goal.
Through a simple club activity, Glamour Pals demonstrated how acts of kindness can create meaningful connections. By making holiday cards, the club not only worked toward reducing elder isolation, but also strengthened its own sense of community. As the holiday season ends, Glamour Pals continues to find thoughtful ways to remind seniors that they are noticed, valued, and cared for.
