The Malden Public Library is home to many historic artifacts from Malden’s past, including the Converse exhibit built in 1885. Throughout the years, new additions have been made to the museum; a recent one with a powerful story is the Joel Cooper and Deborah Gordon Cooper Exhibit.

This is a story of a man and his wife: the husband, Joel Cooper, was a printmaker and created art for his wife Deborah Gordon Cooper to garner inspiration for her poems. Joel was dedicated to his artwork, with each piece taking 100 hours to complete, and he has a total of over 170 pieces of art to his name. Joel made a dedication and commitment to continue painting until he died in 2021. Deborah has a total of six collections of poetry world containing 30 to 100 poems each. They are husband and wife power team, each well-versed in the beautiful world of poetry and art.

When arriving at the history gallery, visitors are taken in with unique pieces and artwork everywhere. “We are a regional art museum; we are known for amazing prints and pieces and constantly receiving work”, stated Dora St. Martin, the director of the Malden Public Library.

The exhibit consists of 33 pieces of artwork which takes up the center of the second floor in a unique display that catches the eye of anyone walking by. Visitors, if they wish, have the ability to view the talented work of the Coopers until the end of the year 2024 when the gallery will be taken down.

Though the history section of the library has been there for decades, many people living in Malden don’t know it exists.  “Promoting new events and art at the gallery is one way we get the news out though we struggle pulling in younger audiences who may not know about this side of the library,” stated Martin.

The Malden Public Library has done its part throughout the years hosting events and showcasing galleries to the citizens of Malden. The community and Malden residents can look forward to their monthly rotating art gallery for the year 2025.
