After a passionate 2024 season, highlighting multiple Greater Boston League (GBL) all-star players who are on the team, such as senior Captain Brenda Darisse, senior Mercedes Costa Aispuro, and junior Sofia Vargas, the Malden Girls’ Soccer team is ready to continue growing their connections, team spirit, and determination throughout the 2025 season.

To achieve this goal, the team has hosted various captains’ practices and car washes over the summer, in hopes of building team funds and skills for the future.

On September 11th, 2025, the Girls’ Malden soccer team played an intense match against the “best team in the league, who won GBL champs for two years in a row,” girls’ soccer coach, Rick Caceda, mentioned. Prior to this match, the Malden Tornados won their first game of the season against Everett, 3-2, determined to make States this year.

Throughout the match against Somerville, Malden showcased their fiery defense as the Highlanders kept pushing in vigorously, eventually resulting in a loss of 8-0. During the first quarter, Somerville got a jump ahead, scoring their first goal three minutes into the game.

Soon after, Malden’s goalie, freshman Sofia Leno, with the help of her fellow teammates, was able to pick up Somerville’s fast-paced tactics and block multiple scoring attempts.

Thanks to Malden’s fast-thinking skills, Somerville did not score another goal and was slowed down by Malden’s adaptive defense. Malden kept them on their toes with their skillful communications and superior teamwork.

Towards the end of the intense first half, Caceda reminded the girls to focus on passing and helping each other, which in turn spiked their defensive performance.

Nyla Pierre, a junior back, shocked the crowd as she moved swiftly to cover the goalie from an attempted shot from Somerville. In turn, Pierre stole the ball from the opponent, creating an offensive play that allowed center midfielder Meriam Bouchtout to take possession of the ball and attempt to score.

Despite ending the first half 5-0 in favor of Somerville, Malden did not let their determination die down.
