The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) club held its first meeting of the year with a brand new set of officers after coming back from a long period of inactivity.
SDG was created by the United Nations in 2015 and reconstructed from their first set of goals MDG (Millenium Development Goals) in 2000. This transformation is a guideline for 17 new “universal” and “interconnected” reform goals that they hope to achieve by 2030. Ranging from “eradicat[ing ] poverty” to “managing natural disasters,” and so much more. These goals are recognized by 193 countries around the world as urgent actions necessary to sustain the Earth and its inhabitants.
The club within Malden High aspires to reach success in the following categories: providing more access to food and ensuring everybody receives a quality education.
Reassembled by junior Anniyah Azhar, SDG plans to host a plethora of events throughout the year to spread and promote the message of the importance of sustainability and the values of coming together to make a difference in the community.
“Due to some events that unfolded my freshman year, we didn’t have SDG club,” explained Azhar, “When I learned about the incident, I wanted to restart it.”

Besides community events such as food drives or fundraisers, the club plans to host interactive events throughout the year such as “movie nights, taping teachers to the wall, and scavenger hunts,” treasurer Kailey Bae expressed.
“I appreciate that the club combines volunteering opportunities with STEM-related activities,” shared club member junior Eric Lin.
With the club council’s emphasis on environmental and social awareness, they will prioritize the development and the expansion of their ideals and goals throughout Malden’s community.
Needing a necessary role to invite new members and spread the word of the club, Social Media Coordinator and Lead Reporter for The Blue and Gold, Kyle Dang, strives to “represent the organization accurately, giving more recognition on a local level while helping the club meet its environmental goals.”
During the club’s second meeting, the group maintained consistent engagement with their new members, with the officers hosting a “brainstorming” session for potential future events. The group of eager students expressed their ideas altogether, building excitement for the events to come.
“I’m excited to see what we’re going to be able to accomplish in this club,” exclaimed club advisor and history teacher James Hill.
