Bake With Change Creates Big Impact with Small Treats

With the start of the new school year, students at Malden High School have been motivated to start up new clubs. One of the many clubs introduced is Bake With Change, a baking club that aims to leave a great impact on its community.

Co-founders, senior Mariyah Hoseen and junior Chailynn Auger, were discussing important topics within society when Auger noticed that oftentimes “many important issues” are “overlooked” because they do not “directly” affect students at Malden High. Searching for a way to involve students’ creativity in resolving these issues, Hoseen came across the “perfect way to combine creativity and purpose” in a club: baking.

The officers approached Michaela Ilebode, a new art teacher at Malden High, who was interested in being their advisor. Ilebode shared the co-founders’ goals and was happy to accept their invitation, providing “the needed space to be able to run the club,” as well as “giving back to the community and helping out.”

Every other week, the club holds a meeting to find an issue the members can focus on. Following the meeting, they spend some time researching the chosen topic to understand its cause and where their support is needed. The club then moves to the bake sale process, creating delicious goods, selling them at the school, and donating all profits to the cause.

Bake With Change looks to center its focus on the members. The club officers dedicate their time to what members care for the most and what has the strongest impact on them. “Unlike other clubs where members are the ones who have to cater to the club, this one caters to them,” shared Hoseen.

While making a positive impact on their community, the club also has a profound impact on its members. Hoseen hopes to leave a lasting footprint on the community, looking forward to seeing “students come together not just to bake, but to inspire change with one another,” even when she graduates the following year.

Students can contribute to the club by creating treats for its bake sale. For those who may not be the best bakers yet still want to support the club, the officers have options for students to assist in raising funds for causes.

From buying homemade goods displayed at bake sales to donating baking supplies and sharing ideas at meetings, Hoseen and Auger aim to engage students in any way possible. Regardless of their skills or capabilities, Bake With Change strives to continue being impactful
“Every small action helps us continue our mission to create change through baking,” concluded Hoseen.
