2026? More like 2016: Malden’s Throwback of Memories Trend

Every year we see new trends arise. 2026 has brought nostalgia to ten years ago, where everyone was reflecting on their memories from 2016. This comparison started with the snow storm in 2016, which caused multiple shut downs and that same thing happened this year.

With multiple influencers posting their pics from 2016 and creating this trend, there is a chain reaction with multiple people following and showing their photos. This trend has reached the eyes of many from teachers to students.

There is a massive change in the take of fashion, where many people were doing experimental fashion. Not only that but we are seeing the music industry slowly make its way back to what was released in 2016. Junior student Judes Depeine shared that his favorite song from 2016 was “I’m Sorry” by Justin Bieber and that he still listens to the song today.

History teacher Courtney Braz mentioned the “musical feeling” that she felt from 2016. “The music was so much fun and it was like Rihanna put out music the last time she ever did, Beyonce put out Lemonade, Fetty Wap, it was very fun.”

Many people view 2016 as a golden year, where everyone had fun and saw different personal interests with so many options. “We could joke openly and not worry about any judgement and it made it such a fun time,” said media teacher Jim Valente.

Pokemon Go came out and became super popular. “I started playing with my friends in middle school,” said Junior Ani Rangel. At the same time we saw Pokemon Go come out we also saw Virtual Reality released. This was a big step for technology at the time and has encouraged more advances today.

Art teacher Michaela Ilebode mentioned her time playing basketball and now she coaches it. Science teacher Emma Penafiel talked about her past and present experiences in field hockey.

While looking back in time people notice how some of our favorite memories affect us today. Whether it became a part of your career or the lifestyle you live. These throwbacks of memories allow us to actually think back in those moments and see how much our past actually affected our present and how our actions led to bigger things. Whether or not those actions are good or bad are up to you but at the end of the day it will be the same time, same place, and same memory.
