High school is one of the best times to plan your future, but some question where to start. Do you want to be a Doctor? Do you want to be in the army? Maybe you want to be a professional athlete or artist; the planning begins during these four years of school, and luckily, students are given the opportunity to explore this in person. On May 13th, 2026, Malden High School held a Job and Career fair in the gallery.
Students browsed through about 20 booths, including the Malden Fire Department, multiple pool companies, and different military branches. Some students filled out applications, while others looked around and went up to booths that piqued their interests. There was also a professional photo company taking free headshots for students, which could be used for a LinkedIn profile or business email profile.

The fair was held by counselors Taryn Gabbay and Erin Craven, who added a twist that could easily help uninterested students: a bingo card. The card included multiple questions that students could ask those running the booths. Phrases such as “What does a typical day look like in this role?” or “What level or type of education is needed for this job?” Students who collected their approved marks from the booths could turn their cards in and enter into a raffle for a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card.

One of the main skills that was practiced during the career fair was professionalism and communication skills. Gabbay expressed that “another part is also just for us all to be working on our professionalism, like shaking a hand, making eye contact, talking to maybe an adult that you don’t know yet. Eventually, down the road, when you have an interview, it is good practice to have some of that here.”
Growing up can seem scary. It can feel like you’re slipping away from your childhood years every second of high school, but with the special help from those in our community, teachers, and classmates, it feels a bit easier.
