On September 10th, Malden High welcomed parents to Back-to-School Night. Some of them entered the school for the first time, and other parents returned for another year as their children moved a year closer to their graduation. However, this year felt a little different with the addition of the new principal, Michael Sabin. Parents came into the building with a lot of questions, excitement, and also curiosity about how the new principal would contribute to the new school year.

The night began with Sabin welcoming all the families before they visited their children’s classes and teachers. The school’s auditorium quickly filled up, and parents had the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the meeting.
Superintendent Timothy Sippel stated that the large turnout was one of the things that stood out to him. “It seemed like people were very attentive. They appreciated the clarity of the information that was presented,” expressed Sippel.

After the welcoming parents spread through the building to find their students’ educators, student volunteers were also an important part of the evening, as they led families to find the right classrooms.
Erwin Estaban and his wife, Gloria Cabrera, were among the parents who attended the event. They spoke with student volunteers who helped them find their way and answered their questions. The interaction was one great example of how students and families came together throughout the night.

Teachers waited and prepared in their classrooms to meet parents and let them know what a certain course is about and what they need in order to connect with the teachers.
For Sippel, Back-to-School Night is more than just meeting new teachers. He believes that it gives parents an opportunity to know more about what their kids every day might look like. “I think having students’ parents know and being able to get to know the teachers is really important,” Sippel concluded.
