With a new spring sports season starting, the boys volleyball team is working hard to pull off many wins. This year’s captains are seniors Kingson Chen and Yoji Yonetani. Practices are held every day for varsity from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and the first home game was held on April 6th at 5:30 p.m.

Malden High’s varsity volleyball team discusses team plays.

During COVID-19, the team prepared for the season by playing grass volleyball on the weekends. They are looking forward to doing better than they did last year, and are confident in winning many games this season.

Captain Yoji Yonetani and varsity player Kevin Lin keep their guard up for defense.

As one of the captains, Chen’s goal is to teach the hitters to be more aggressive and confident, and learn how to hit the ball well. His goal for this season is to win at least two or three rounds of states.

“I think what we have to work on this year is our chemistry because we haven’t played with each other as much and we have to learn to synergize with the two new setters because they’re the ones that control where the ball goes and how the hitters hit the ball,” Chen said.
