Though the Christmas season is over, the Malden Public Library decided to host one last Christmas-themed movie night. They decided on “The Holdovers” which is directed by Alexander Payne and was released on October 27, 2023.

“The Holdovers” is one of the few rated R films that the Malden Public Library has screened but unlike the young adult program at the library, the Malden Public Library does not have the same restrictions when it comes to the rating of films.

Before the movie started, there was a long line of movie attendees waiting outside of the Maccario room that was filled with signs all around promoting the movie night.

While the young adult program events are run by Patrick Brennan, the Malden Public Library movie nights are hosted by Stacy Holder with the help of The Friends of the Malden Public Library organization and both do wonderful jobs hosting events like these for the young adult section. They also host arts and craft events and activities.

The movie night had a big turnout with students from Malden High School appearing and many residents from Malden all with different backgrounds brought together to watch the screening.

As with many of the other movie nights, delicious snacks and beverages were offered all provided by The Friends of the Malden Public Library. The different snacks and beverages that were provided were bags filled with popcorn, tootsie rolls, Oreo cookies and various small candies. For the drinks they had a selection of Fanta, Ginger Ale, Moxie, and water.

The movie is considered a feel-good movie with a strict teacher named Paul Hunham who has been forced to stay in the boarding school he works at for winter break due to the students who had nowhere to go for the holidays. At first, he is annoyed as he must stay with the school’s troublemaker, Angus Tully, who he already had tensions with. As time grows on he grows a bond with Angus and the other students that stayed behind for winter break. Though Christmas is over, it was still a good film to sit down and watch with people of the Malden community.

With another successful screening, Malden residents can look forward to monthly movie nights and other events by the Malden Public Library.
