There are many movies in the world, but in the United States, one that would be considered a classic high school comedy and drama film is the 2004 “Mean Girls” starring Lindsay Lohan. The film focuses on the struggles of a high school girl and the “rules” of popularity with friends turning their backs on each other, but throughout the film, there is development in the main characters and you can see the change characters induce from the beginning, middle, and end of the film.
This year, there was a twist to the old Mean Girls movie: a film of the same title, but now an adaptation of a New York Broadway Musical with returning characters Cady Heron and Regina George. With 69% Rotten Tomatoes, there were many mixed reviews on the movie and whether a remake of the original was necessary.
Patrick Brennan from The Young Adult program at The Malden Public Library does an amazing job keeping up with their monthly movie nights screening newly released titles that they know teenagers and kids ranging from 5th-12th grade will enjoy.
The movie night had a good turnout with students from different middle schools and high schools, some wearing school uniforms and others in regular clothing, but no matter what grade, age, or gender, Mean Girls was a good choice by Patrick Brennan to watch for everyone to enjoy.
The movie premiered in the Maccario Room as all of the previous movie nights were hosted with light refreshments such as smart food popcorn with different flavors such as Cheddar Cheese, Kettle Corn, movie theater butter, Caprisun, and mini Oreo packets, by the end of the movie, the layout of all the snacks was nearly empty.
The movie is similar to the original “Mean Girls,” but with musicals, there was more music and singing and less conversation. The musical introduces a few new characters, many with the same names but with different actors. In the film, there are cameos from previous actors of the 2004 Mean Girls film and music artists such as Lindsay Lohan paying respect to the original film, and Megan Thee Stallion showing the evolution between generations.
Young adults can look forward to miniature painting crafts at the Malden Public Library on the 23rd and to another movie night in the month of June as summer nears.
