Malden High’s chemistry teacher Kate Haskell strikes again with her helpful guidance as an advisor of the engaging Science Club at Malden High School.
“I enjoy doing it. It involves students who are interested in science and are really motivated to bring science to the community in different ways, and as a science teacher, I really enjoy that,” expressed Haskell. “It gives me a way to share my love for science outside the classroom in a different way.”
There have been many college students who have come to the Science Club to talk about topics that are not taught here in Malden High School, engaging and captivating Science Club members looking to expand their scientific knowledge. “We had quite a few speakers come in, and because we had connections to MIT and Tufts; we had speakers come and talk about things that we don’t have here because they’re higher level and more advanced…” For example, “They would talk about astrophysics,” voiced Haskell.
“It’s been very successful. We have different sorts of activities every year,” Haskell continued. She expressed how the club is able to “take the interest of the students and grow with that and do activities based on what the students want to do.”
These activities included having “speakers, a mini science fair, cleanups of the community, and tutoring for lower schools.” Haskell emphasized that it has “really been driven by whatever the students want to do and what they are interested in.”
She concluded that the club has been successful and fun for the students since she began advising three years ago.
