Boys Tennis: New Coach and High Hopes

It is that time of year again: spring sports have officially started. The boys tennis team started  the season with high aspirations. Although they have lost a lot of senior members from last year, they look to strive to improve and strengthen their new team.  To progress further, the team will need to work harder, but is open to doing anything possible to become Greater Boston League champions. Senior captain Christopher Li believes that as long as the team puts in their best effort and is determined to win, “they will see another year on that banner.”

This season, the team has a new coach, Jayson Payeur. He is also the new physical education teacher. This is Payeur’s first time coaching boys tennis but he was an assistant swim coach at the University of New England this past winter. The team was excited to welcome a new coach, even though according to Li “ [He prefers] having the same coach consistently for [his] high school career.” However, he is excited to be able to share his passion for tennis with a new person. The team is excited to have Payeur as the coach because he is hardworking and determined to make this a great season. According to Payeur, he is excited to coach the tennis team and “just looking to have a good season.”Hopefully even leading them to the GBL title.

The team has just finished the tryout process. According to Li, tryouts were successful with the help of the coach and veteran members. There were many people who signed up to play tennis this year. When there are too many players, cuts have to be made. “It is not an easy thing to do,” stated Li. But the captains like to remind kids that this should not discourage them from trying out again next year, but instead to encourage them to improve themselves to become better.

The team is striving to become GBL champions and to go to the states tournament. With these expectations, a new coach and hard work, the tennis team is off to good start to a well-played season.
