The varsity girls’ basketball team, led by senior captains Angelina “Angie” Colon and Victoria “Tori” Gammon, started their season out with a 44-22 dominating win against Everett.

Coming out on top with this big win, Colon believes that “if we play how we did today, with a few fixes we will be all set to win the GBL Champs title.”

The Malden girls finished off the first quarter with a 9-point lead. Colon led this quarter with multiple strong drives toward the basket, helping Malden score.

However, at the start of the second quarter, Malden had committed multiple turnovers. “We played well. There were, however, minor errors that everyone had made, but the errors will decrease over time,” Gammon commented.

Even though the Golden Tornados struggled at the beginning of the 2nd quarter, they played incredible defense, only allowing Everett to score a few points. This low-scoring quarter helped Malden go into halftime up 24-9.

Beginning the second half, the Malden squad started with a pushing offense with Gammon taking the first bucket for an “and-1” and junior Kimberly “Kim” Tropnas grabbing a rebound, putting it up for 2.

Again, they played incredible defense, never letting their guard down. Tropnas mentioned, “I feel as though the team’s defense was very good, keeping the ball out of the paint.”

Everett opened the last quarter with vigorous grit, hitting a 2-pointer. Gammon responded with a layup. As the quarter moved on, both teams struggled to score.

Malden then continued to win this competitive game with a score that doubled their opponents, 44-22. After their Tuesday night win, they continued their season with a home win against GBL opponent Somerville but lost Friday night to a strong Whittier Tech team.
