Malden High went into the four-day Thanksgiving break with Spirit Week, the time when many students come out to participate and show their school spirit. Spirit Week is an exciting time that brings out the competitiveness within each grade at Malden High School, allowing students to forget about their academics and simply have fun. It started on November 15th with the first theme being Culture Day and ended on November 22nd with the Pep Rally, where students gathered in the gymnasium to have fun and watch their fellow students compete to win the Pep Rally for their grade.
The first day of Spirit Week was “Culture Day.” With the great diverse community of Malden High, many students came out to represent their culture. As students walked through the halls, they could see all the different flags being waved around with pride. Many came wearing their cultural, native, or religious clothing. Some students even did face paint to further showcase their culture. “Honestly, being able to see all the different flags and different cultural clothes being worn by students taught me about different cultures I didn't know about and it further showed the diversity at Malden High,”, explained freshman Camila Haro. With the incredibly diverse student body of Malden High, it was amazing to see the many different cultures.
Malden High went into the second day of Spirit Week with “Anything but a Bag Day.” This day allowed students to show their creativity and have some fun. This day broke away from the usual boring bags and allowed students to carry their items in boxes, crock pots, buckets, and even kayaks. “I think it was a nice fun way for students to express themselves in a way that is not harmful and creative,” Emily Duong added.
Brought back from last year, the third day was “Twin Day.” Students enjoyed showcasing their friendship by being seen twinning with their friends. People could be seen walking side by side with their twins through the hallways. For those lucky enough, they could have even spotted some twins matching together—taking twin day to another level.
Students returned for the continuation of spirit week on monday with “Pajama Day.” Arguably, this was the best day considering that some students already come to school in pajamas on a regular basis. “This was one of my favorite days because I already come to school in pajamas, so it was just a regular day for me,” freshman Emma Parlee stated.
“Decades/Wacky Tacky Day” was the fifth day of Spirit Week where people could be seen wearing the classic 90s/2000’s style. The classic baggy jeans and bandanas were sported by many students. Some people took the chance to wear some of their best eyesore-inducing outfits. Loud colors and tutus were worn by some brave people who were not scared to show off their wackiest tackiest outfits.
Overall, Spirit Week proved to be an enjoyable time for students and staff alike, which was perfect for kicking off the long weekend.
