In their home country, they felt welcomed and included, but in Malden, especially among other Nepalis, they often felt excluded. This feeling might stem from language barriers, which are a significant hurdle for many immigrants in the United States.
Malden High has made continuous efforts to celebrate diverse cultures through events such as Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month; however, there is room for improvement in terms of representation. The focus of the celebration often lies on Eastern Asian countries, often leaving out countries like Nepal. Malden High could enhance its inclusivity by highlighting a broader range of cultures, ensuring that every student feels represented and included.
Beyond cultural diversity, Malden High is also a place where students of different sexual orientations and gender identities find a supportive environment. The school has various clubs and organizations aimed at fostering understanding and acceptance. These groups provide safe spaces for students to express themselves. For example, the Rainbow Lions Club gives students a chance to discuss issues related to sexuality and gender.
